Kick Off Waste Reduction Week With The Canucks' Fin
The Waste Reduction Week Kick-off for B.C. is Sunday, October 17th 2004 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Kerrisdale Community Centre, 5851 West Boulevard, in Vancouver.
RCBC invites everyone for a free continental breakfast, to learn more about reducing waste at home, to be entertained, make some crafts, and play some games in a fun family atmosphere.
Canucks' mascot Fin arrives at 10 a.m. with autograph cards and to play a little hockey with young Canucks fans. He'll be assisted by the comedic antics of the Firehall Players Improv (FPI) group, who will perform their special brand of comedy improv, then invite youth attending to join in their interactive improv games.
There will also be face painting, games, arts and crafts and more. So don't miss the chance to have a muffin, shoot a puck at Fin, have a laugh and learn about reducing the waste in your life.
Other groups attending include the City of Vancouver with demonstrations of the city's new automated residential-waste pick-up system. |

Also raising awareness about solid waste reduction via media, creating resource recovery linkages among Nelson businesses, and will be conducting waste reduction presentations and projects with local grade schools. |

The City of Surrey's Partners in Parks volunteer program and ReLeaf tree-planting program, will be launching a Community Pick 'n Plant Event at Fleetwood Park, located at 160th Street & 80th Avenue in Surrey. On Saturday October 23rd, from 10 am - 2 pm, families, friends and neighbours will join together to participate in a massive park clean-up of Fleetwood Park and then further enhance the space by planting native shrubs and trees. This free family-oriented event will also showcase face painting, garbage-reducing relay races, display presentations, and other fun educational activities throughout the day. Everyone is welcome. |

During National Waste Reduction Week in Canada, October 18-24, 2004, we invite the community to visit our facility to learn how our refurbishing operation works - and how our next-door neighbour, TechnoTrash Okanagan Limited-"de-manufactures" obsolete electronic equipment for zero-waste recycling.
We will be in attendance from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. each day to conduct informal tours of the facility and to answer your questions.
Also, from October 18 – 23, we will be conducting a joint "E-waste Round-up". We will be accepting working and waste electronics equipment at no charge. We invite everyone with unused computers etc. to bring them along to help provide computers for needful people, and to divert E-waste from the landfill!

Delta will celebrate Waste Reduction Week with its Annual Environmental Fair and National Science & Technology Week. The event will take place from October 18 - 22 at the Delta Municipal Hall at 4500 Clarence Taylor Crescent. Environmental organizations will have on display exhibits of their initiatives in the community. Highlights of the Kid's Day on Oct 22 include a bat box workshop, landfill tours, and a junkology arts and crafts demonstration. |

We have arranged with the Communicator Newsletter to host a contest to raise awareness of the Waste Reduction Week Canada in October. The contest begins on Oct 4th and ends Oct 24th; winner will be announced Nov. 1st. The Communicator will be covering the event with articles and announcements and reminders throughout the month of October. We are asking people in the community to submit the best reuse idea to the newsletter. The best reuse idea wins our book, Trash Talk - an inspirational guide to saving time and money through better waste and resource management. There may be many excellent reuse ideas from this contest and we plan to post them on our website's Tip of the Week. This service on our website will be a place where individuals and organizations can share reuse and reduction ideas. (This will be on-line in a couple of months.) We hope that this contest will bring awareness to both the concept of waste reduction and inform people about the annual waste reduction week. We hope that this event will be only the first of waste reduction events in our community and that others will help make this a larger, more ambitious community project every year. |

October 23 Fall Foliage Composting Celebration from 10am to 3pm at Minter Country Gardens on Young Road North, Chilliwack. This fun filled day of "Edutainment" will educate the public on the importance of backyard composting and the EASE at which it can be done!! There will be a series of speakers giving 15-minute lectures on composting. Aunty Litter, a local children's entertainer, will be helping to get the message of composting out using music and comedy. There will be radio personalities on site, Brian Minter and lots and lots of give-aways! Entrance to the event is the donation of a non-perishable food staple for the Salvation Army Community Food Bank. The donation gives you a chance at winning a backyard composter!!! |

Our school will be promoting garbageless lunch week as well as waste reduction in the school and home, and our teachers will be teaching lessons geared toward ways to accomplish this worthy goal. Currently we have a recycling program in place - where paper, cardboard and beverage containers are sent to the recyclers. We also have many electricity saving initiatives in place, such as shutting all computers down when not in use, automatic shut offs for classroom lights with motion sensors. We are currently updating our HVAC system to increase its efficiency thereby reducing natural gas waste. |

The Public: Anyone can enter, it’s easy, and all they have to do is bring their own shopping bags. Stores are encouraged to have their staff and customers bring in their cotton bags and plastic totes or reuse those plastic bags stored up in their closets. For every reusable bag a customer has they will have the opportunity to win some great prizes.
Businesses: The store with the most entry forms could win up to $500.00 worth of free advertising.

Explore the Township of Langley Demonstration Garden and discover how composting reduces the amount of garbage we throw out. 1. Counting Litter Out - teaching guide
Grades 3 to 7, 2 hours
Study litter around your school; Explore litter's impact and what it reveals about your community. Conduct a litter survey then analyze the results. Survey results contribute to real litter survey for the Township. All survey supplies are provided, classes receive a certificate signed by the Mayor and each participant receives a gift.

2. Litterless Lunch Challenge - "contest" with teaching guide
For all levels
Explore the endless options to make your lunch litterless where nothing is thrown away. Students and teachers discuss then plan and pack litterless lunches.
Teachers receive a Litterless Lunch Pack that includes information about litterless lunches and letters to get parents involved. Submit designs complete with carrying instructions for great prizes.

1. Throwing Curricula in the Garbage: Ideas and Resources You Can Fit into Just One Bag
GVRD Teach the Teacher Workshop, K to 1
Explore the world of castaways and make sense of the senseless waste. Learn about the big problem and solutions. Try activities to explore plant and animal cycles, changes in physical science, composting, natural resources and recycling paper, glass, metals, and plastics. Complete with take-away resources, activities ideas and connections.

1. Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Days
Rid yourself from years of accumulated household hazardous waste, HHW. Drop-off your HHW at our weekend event and properly dispose of these materials that are harmful to the environment. Learn about alternatives to HH products, and how you can dispose of them safely and properly throughout the year.

2. Yorkson Creek Clean-up
Join your local streamkeeper group and keep a Langley waterway green and clean. Meet the Yorkson Watershed Stewardship Committee and help them with their regular clean-up of this stream. You'll be surprised at the treasures that are found in this local stream!
Clean-up equipment and refreshments provided. Please dress weather appropriate.

3. Community clean-ups
Are you tired of seeing litter along your neighbourhood? Have you been thinking about doing something about it? Well, here is your chance. The Township of Langley Adopt-a-Program are supporting any community group - families, individuals, organizations and anyone interested, to conduct a one-time clean-up of their neighbourhood.
Conduct your clean-up and receive basic clean-up materials, safety information, and have the garbage removed and disposed of.

Students from the faculty have built a soap box car out of reused materials. They will present their design to a panel of judges. Medicine Hat - Alberta’s Minister of the Environment, the Honorable Lorne Taylor, will join Maxus Technology in teaching grade 4 students at Conaught Elementary School (101 8th Street SW in Medicine Hat) about electronics and eWaste Recycling. The event will feature hands-on activities for the kids including being able to see what’s inside a computer and what parts are toxic. Event time: TBA (most likely 2:00pm). Media are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes prior. |

Alberta bottle depots are encouraged by ABCRC to participate in a contest to increase community knowledge, activity and awareness of bottle depots and the beverage container recycling system. Publicity around the contest will occur throughout the week. |

We currently have a mini-landfill running at the back of the Grade 4 classroom (in the form of a large box) so that students can see for one week how much garbage they actually throw out. Only non-perishables are thrown in the mini-landfill. Students are then made aware of how much garbage can be recycled and they are encouraged to recycle as much as possible. Their recycling efforts are part of what has earned them Emerald status as an environmentally green school. |

Calgary Co-op is doubling its “Bags to Riches” refund. Customers will receive 6 cents rather than 3 cents for each bag that they bring in to reuse while shopping. Edmonton Catholic Schools Printing Department practices waste reduction throughout the year. Paper packaging is saved and reused when shipping orders out to the schools. Scratch pads are made out of good-one-side paper from rejected print jobs. During Waste Reduction Week, our Printing Department will be giving free scratch pads out to the schools. |

We will 'launch' Waste Reduction Week on the Saturday prior - October 16 - with our Second Annual Electronics Swap meet - beginning with a 7 AM breakfast, and ending with dinner theatre approximately 9 PM. Throughout the day we will host a series of seminars on electronics, Internet, and E-Waste Reduction. Shortly we will write a web page with details - see it at our web page of ecn.ab.ca. Last year we launched this week (again on the prior Saturday to the week) with our First Annual Electronics Swap meet, where Edmontonians could come and swap electronics and keep them out of the landfill while there was still some use in them. October 18, 2004 is our 10th anniversary, and we celebrate on the Saturday closest to that date each year - thus choosing to launch the Waste Reduction Awareness week on our birthday. Our Grade 4 students are very active leaders in promoting waste reduction on a school-wide level. One class has implemented a daily collection of recyclable beverage containers, the funds of which will be used to adopt an animal at the Valley Zoo. They also collect can tabs for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. The other grade 4 class is working towards the designation of Earth school by having all schools participate in various recycling activities from reusing both sides of paper to litterless lunches once a week to reducing power consumption. Both of these classes generally make the school population more environmentally aware and will be making special efforts to promote waste reduction during the upcoming Waste Reduction Week. |

The Grade 4 classes at St. Benedict School are currently learning about waste in the science topic Waste in Our World. In conjunction with Waste Reduction Week, a new initiative will be launched at St. Benedict. A Litterless Lunch program will be set up which basically aims at keeping school lunch waste to a minimum. This program will provide an excellent opportunity to apply learning to everyday life. Some suggestions to help make this program work would include: using reusable containers (both for food and drink), ziplock baggies (as they can be reused), using the appropriate containers to discard lunch items, classroom bin for juice boxes/bottles/pop cans, classroom white bucket for leftover food items bread crusts, apple cores, orange/banana peels, etc, the new Blue Bags for recyclable items milk cartons, lunchable boxes, fruit tins, yogurt/pudding containers, small cardboard candy boxes (Smarties, raisins, etc.), making a conscious effort to use the garbage cans both inside and outside the school. It is important that we work together as all of us have an important role to play in reducing waste. We, at St. Benedict School, will work on being part of the solution to our environmental concerns. We want a clean school, both inside and outside, and we all need to try our best to make our Litterless Lunch program work. |

We have 49 grade 4 students who have taken on the challenge of becoming the Recycling Club Leaders in their school. During lunch hour they collect juice boxes and drink containers, keeping a running count of the number of containers collected and displaying the results on the hallway bulletin board. The money raised from this project, which started at the beginning of the year, will be donated to a Canadian environmental organization to be determined at a later date. So far they have collected 1361 containers. During Waste Reduction Week the Recycling Club Leaders will be increasing their efforts to collect more containers for their project. |

Since Fall 2003 environmental emphasis at Blue Mountain Resort has revolved around waste management. The rationale behind developing a waste management program was to reduce and where possible eliminate waste through rethinking, recycling and reuse initiatives. Great efforts have been made to improve the infrastructure available for both the staff and guests to recycle, as well as adding and improving signage. Projects that have contributed immensely to the success of our program include an industrial composting program as well as Sort @ Source our hotel room recycling program in the village. This summer we introduced a new outdoor recycling look through the addition of outdoor multi-sort recycling bins. We chose units that were constructed from recycled milk jugs to help complete the recycling circle and create markets that will keep recycling programs working. Goals and projects for the upcoming year include: continuing to improve and refine our waste management program and drafting a purchasing policy that incorporates our environmental priorities. |

In each classroom as well as the staff lounge we have recycling containers for paper, plastics, cans, glass jars and compostables. At the end of the day, we have a team of three students that collects all of the recycling and a team of two students who collect the compostables for the compost pile. We have been doing this for years because we teach the children that we are all earth keepers; we therefore reduce, reuse and recycle. We have a recycling bin for paper and invite parents to bring their newspapers, magazines and advertising flyers to this bin; the collection company pays us for these materials which helps to fund other environmental programs. We encourage the children to bring food to school in washable, reusable containers so that we don’t end up with too many garbage bags filled with food packaging. The student council has a year round pop can race and twice a year we are able to sell these cans to an aluminium recycler. We also collect all the lost and found clothing in the school and a parent washes items for donation to a local charity store. |

On going waste reduction initiatives including recycling of paper products, all classes have a big bin (former garbage bin) for recycling paper, grade 6 students are in charge of emptying them. All classes have a small bucket for compost, all children and staff participate in composting. Grade 3 and Grade 6 students are in charge of emptying all the buckets and taking them to our 3 compost bins outside in the schoolyard. All classes recycle tetrapaks (milk and juice boxes) as well as plastic containers #1 #2. Grade 6 students pick up the recyclables from all the classes everyday. Two classes have vermicomposts in their classrooms, and children participate in taking care of them. During special meal days, Christmas dinner, hot meals the children uses plates and glasses from home. They are kept at school all year so that they are easily used. The Green committee of the school succeeded, after much research, to change the cleaning products used in the school. The janitors now use EnviroChem products, which are environmentally friendly.
Our planned WRW activities: Presentations in all the classes done by Grade 6 students on recycling and composting etc; Litterless lunches this week. We concentrated on one thing each day of the week (ex Monday: Juice in reusable containers etc); We are collecting batteries from homes in order to dispose of them properly. The Commission is launching the expansion of its regional recycling program. Plastic code #1, 4, 5 can now be recycled with the #2 plastics. Office paper can now be added to the newsprint. Other recyclables accepted at the community recycling depots include corrugated cardboard and boxboard and food cans. To promote the regional recycling program, the Valley Commission will be holding a "Valley Recycling Day" at three depot locations with a ribbon cutting ceremony at each site with dignitaries, local fire fighters will serve BBCued hot dogs and refreshments, live radio broadcasting, prizes. A newsletter will be distributed to 15,000 households to inform the public of the program expansion. There will be radio call-in contest with callers asked to answer a question about the recycling program. |

ENVIRO-DEPOTT CONTEST - Residents are encouraged to visit their local ENVIRO-DEPOTT during Waste Reduction Week for a chance to win a prize. This year the theme will focus on the Nova Scotia Paint Recycling Program - "Give Your Paint a Second Chance!" Residents can fill out a ballot to win a prize.
"GET REWARDED" RADIO CONTEST - RRFB Nova Scotia and municipalities from across Nova Scotia will be looking for residents who are "doing good' for the environment. A radio ad will bring attention to their efforts as educators hit the streets to reward residents who are recycling, composting, carrying a cloth bag, using a reusable mug, etc. So get involved in some kind of eco-friendly activity - you may win a prize.
BUSINESS VISITS - Waste reduction educators from across Nova Scotia will be visiting businesses throughout Waste Reduction Week to spread the message of the 3R's - REDUCE - REUSE - RECYCLE and composting. Educators will be offering blue boxes and free advice on waste diversion programs. If you would like a visit at your business, contact RRFB Nova Scotia for the name of an educator near you!

"Waste Reduction Week Challenge for Families"
IWMC wants to hear what families have initiated to reduce waste in their households over and above their participation in Waste Watch. Each participant will receive canvas shopping bags (to help reduce the need for plastic) and a year's supply of blue bags (to assist with continued recycling efforts). "Waste Reduction Contest for Schools"
IWMC is launching a contest to schools to enhance their Waste Watch and waste reduction efforts. Classrooms will be encouraged to organize events or develop and implement activities to promote the 3 R's of waste management... REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE. Classrooms will be encouraged to submit their activities to IWMC by April 1, 2005 and random draws of classroom pizza lunches will be made during Earth Day in April of 2005. IWMC Wasteless Lunch Day - to be held on Thursday, Oct. 21st. Employees are encouraged to pack lunches where nothing remaining after lunch is eaten will be put in either the WASTE or RECYCLING stream. Participants may submit their names and any tips they implemented at home to achieve this success and be entered for a draw for a lunch gift certificate.
IWMC Waste Reduction Tips - IWMC Employees are encouraged to submit tips on how to reduce wastes (of any kind) in their workplace. Key advantages to reducing waste at IWMC benefit not only our environment, but in some cases could provide savings from more efficient work practices, improved morale, a reduction in expenses, and overall, would contribute to an enhanced corporate image for IWMC.
