WasteNOT
- Nanaimo
WasteNOT is an organization whose mission is to convert waste materials into useable resources through the advancement and implementation of innovative technologies.

The first initiative that WasteNOT is undertaking is to bring a state-of-the art recycling plant that recycles disposable diaper products for children and a range of incontinence products for adults (known as personal hygiene products or PHPs) to southern Vancouver Island in 2007.

These products result in over 7,000 tonnes of PHP waste going to landfills on southern Vancouver Island each year and over 26,000 tonnes of this waste being landfilled in the Greater Vancouver Regional District each year. WasteNOT's goal is to divert as much of this waste stream from landfills in B.C. as possible and to extract the plastic, wood fibre and compostable constituents from PHP waste for use in new products.

The patented technology was developed in Canada by a company called Knowaste. The recycling plant will be the first of its kind in western North America and the fourth world-wide. WasteNOT is committed to ensuring that the development and operation of the plant and all of the associated products and services are conducted with environmental sustainability in mind. WasteNOT invites you to learn more by visiting our website at www.wastenotvi.ca

A.B. Daley Elementary
- Nanton
The Grade 5 students and our ECO-KIDS crew are ready to challenge the community! From idea to design, production to distributuion, and purchase to "disposal", just where does all that STUFF come from? What resources do we use and where does the "leftover" STUFF go?

If we are to be sustainable we need to practice BALANCE, HAVE A LONG-TERM VIEW, and DEVELOP INDIVIDUAL ACTION PLANS. We will educate, promote, and practice reducing our ecological footprint.

Alberta Environment Alberta Environment staff across the province support and participate in public WRW events. In addition, each regional office brings a team together to decide on how to participate in WRW at their office. The line-up for this year's staff events is creative and ambitious! A sampling includes:
reuse fairs;
waste-free pot-lucks;
auditing managers' waste bins and guessing who the bin belongs to;
setting up additional recycling stations;
contacting "junk faxers" and asking to be removed from their list;
"Put a Cap on Cups" campaign to get caught and rewarded for using a reusable mug;
presentations;
e-mail trivia contests;
sewing bee to create staff lunch bags;
"4R Spotting" - rewarding those who practice the 4Rs;

AB Environment staff always go the extra mile to celebrate such week-long events, and this year is certainly no exception.

Aquatera Utilities/City of Grande Prairie Aquatera Utilities, Recycle Plus, Weyerhaeuser, Alberta Environment and The City of Grande Prairie are joining forces and planning activities and events associated with National Waste Reduction Week. This is the 5th year that the committee has hosted a community event.

The Community Event will feature a celebrity environmental game show, vermi worm display, art table, guessing games and an environmental fish pond game! We have involved the local community in National Waste Reduction Week by having children from a local school design, produce and announce radio public service advertisements on Big Country XX and SunFm. Local students have created artwork with a waste reduction theme.

Aquatera is also offering a "Caught Recycling" contest. Aquatera will randomly choose a resident recycling at one of the recycling depots within the City or at The Recycle Centre for Building Materials from October 16th - 20th. The resident will win a prize and have their picture published in the Daily Herald Tribune as well as Aquatera's utility bill inserts.

Beaumont, Town of Beaumont has just begun a blue bag recycling project this year. We kicked off the project barely two months ago by providing a start-up kit for each of our households. The kit included four blue bags, four clear bags for grass clippings, an information sheet from our Contractor, as well as a Message from the Mayor.

We placed a large color ad in our local paper a couple weeks ago to remind people what is and what isn't acceptable for recycling. This month, we also sent out a sheet with our utility bills, reminding people of the importance of recycling; and, urging them to 'get with the program'. We also suggested 'grasscycling' and provided reasons to begin that practise.

Cold Lake, City of The City of Cold Lake is a growing community of approximately 12,000 people. City Council set a goal to divert 50% waste from landfill in 2004. In response to that, the City has developed a comprehensive waste diversion plan:
  • We currently offer a drop off depot for recyclables that is used by both the residential and commercial sector.
  • In late September 2006 the City will be initiating curbside collection of recycling and organics for residential units up to 4 units. A limit of three bags of refuse will be imposed per week. Additional bags will require bag tags for a fee.
  • We are in the process of developing a waste diversion program for the industrial, commercial and institutional sector.
  • Toxic Round Ups are held once a year to collect and divert hazardous waste materials from our landfill.
  • To encourage composting, the City implemented a backyard composter incentive program offering a coupon valued at $10.00 off the purchase of a backyard composter from local retailers during the month of May.
  • Education has also been recognized as an important aspect of the waste diversion program. A large part of our program includes educating residents about the benefits of recycling and composting and raising awareness about proper waste management.
The City of Cold Lake is committed to ensuring an effective and sustainable waste management system is in place to ensure the health and safety of our community and environment. City of Cold Lake

New this year we introduced a "boomerang lunch" for those students that stay at school for lunch, whereby all recyclables, reusables and unconsumed food are returned home in student lunchbags. Our community is more capable of recycling and composting items. These efforts occur on a daily basis all school year, not just during waste reduction week.

As well, we started an Environment Club. Our duties include supervising all paper, plastic and glass recycling around the school. We do a weekly weed and pickup of yard garbage as well. This group includes gardening as we are attempting to become a "greener school" within our community.

We are very proud of our efforts so far this year! During Waste Reduction Week we will have daily announcements and use the materials that are being sent to us throughout the school.

Retailers including Zellers, Canadian Tire and Home Depot will help educate the community by posting shelf card reminders and in-store announcements. Several local gas stations will surprise their customers with free blue bag recycling gifts during the week.

And waste reduction efforts continue with our Great Pumpkin Compost Collection taking place after Halloween.

Toronto Waldorf Elementary
- Thornhill
Toronto Waldorf conserves and recycles its own brown and grey water through an in-house, organic filtration system that cleans the water and puts it back into the system to be used as grey water.

TWS has a whole-school composting program run by the Grade 3 class, who take the compost bucket from each room and bring to the compost pile at the organic farm in our backyard.

TWS puts out a newsletter every other week and has recently moved to publishing it on the school website as a way of potentially saving 5000 sheets of paper each month.

TWS uses oral learning as much as possible, particularly in the early years, which means much less emphasis on text books, paper, and materials. The list goes on...

TWS has been given an award the last two years from the City of Vaughan for being the most environmental school in the municipality. We are more than happy to participate in this project!

Willow Academy
- Toronto
Willow Academy has just moved to new premises and is very pleased to announce that we are now a garbage free school. The first theme of our new school year is "garbage" and all the students in the school are learning about garbage, the environment, pollution and how to take action to reduce waste and protect our environment.

The kids are learning about composting, how long it takes for something to break down, how different companies package their products and what uses they can make of materials that have already been used. They are making models of machines (out of recycled materials, of course) that they have created themselves that, if real, would destroy garbage. They are learning about how to make soil richer through composting and are making beautiful art from recycled materials.

They are learning folks songs about the environment such as "Big Yellow Taxi" and "What Have They Done to the Rain?" We are hoping to be able to arrange a trip to a local landfill site.

Interdepartmental Recycling Committee
- St. John's
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's Interdepartmental Recycling Committee (IRC) will have a display on the Main Floor, West Block, Confederation Building which will showcase Waste Reduction Week and its 2006 theme Too Good to Waste!

The committee will be promoting actions that provincial government employees and the public can take to reduce waste and become more active in waste reduction initiatives. The display will feature materials and handouts describing ways to reduce waste reduction and will feature promotional materials from businesses associated with recycling initiatives, i.e., Ever Green Recycling – Mill Lane, Waste Management and the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board.

IRC is asking provincial government employees to share their ideas on how they are either reducing waste or for being waste management friendly at work and/or at home. Employees are encouraged to fill out an entry form listing their idea, suggestion or tip and drop it off in the "Suggestion Box". The entry forms and suggestion box are both located at the display.

A number of prize draws will take place from the suggestion box for promotional materials that have been donated by recycling businesses in the St. John's area. Prizes range from litterless lunch bags, shopping bags to products made from recyclable plastics. As well, a $50.00 cheque will be awarded to the person who makes the most innovative suggestion/tip that reduces the amount of waste that is produced at work and/or at home towards a goal of waste-free living.

IRC is also challenging all provincial government employees to a "No Garbage Lunch" and "No Plastic Bag Used" for a one-week challenge during Waste Reduction Week.

IRC's ongoing waste reduction initiatives throughout the provincial government include:
- Educating people about the benefits of recycling and composting and raising awareness about proper waste management. IRC is committed to ensuring an effective and sustainable waste management system is in place to ensure the health and safety of our community and environment.
- Communicating our efforts with staff and continuing our focus on the three R's - Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!
- The promotion and continuance of recycling.
- Increased use of tupperware/travelware instead of paper/plastic disposables to create "litterless lunches".
- Promoting a campaign to eliminate Styrofoam cups from the workplace. Employees are encouraged to bring their own reusable coffee mug to work. Employees who bring their 12-ounce coffee mug to the CNIB Confederation Building Cafeteria automatically get a 5 cent reduction in the cost of their coffee. Let's all make an effort to see how much styrofoam waste we can eliminate during Waste Reduction Week and the weeks after.
- Employees are encouraged to ask for china cups and saucers, instead of disposable cups, when ordering coffee and tea from the CNIB Cafeteria for department meetings, etc.
- Encouraging employees to bring their own water bottles to work instead of using styrofoam/paper cups for drinking water.
- Encouraging composting of organic materials in the workplace and at home, recycling, the use of both sides of paper before recycling, buying previously owned goods, use of cloth bags/backpacks instead of plastic, use of public transport or walking/cycling.
- Promoting "Lights Out" and "Computers Off" when we leave the workplace in the evening. This initiative will help reduce our hydro usage. Overhead desk lights, table lamps, computers, radios and other electric appliances should be turned off at the end of the work day.
- Encouraging employees to reduce landfill waste by extending the life of their inkjet printer cartridges. Many businesses professionally refill inkjet cartridges with cartridge specific inks saving customers up to 60% on the cost of new replacements. With proper cartridge care, a cartridge can often be refilled more than once, maximizing its use before it is recycled.
- Encouraging the use of recycling throughout the workplace, buying products locally whenever possible, and refraining from buying goods with excessive packaging.
- Contacting "junk faxers" and asking to be removed from their list.

Ongoing initiatives for employees at home and in the workplace to consider include:
- Build a vermi-composter to reduce organic waste.
- Seasonal composting, i.e. pumpkin composting after Halloween and the friendly disposal of evergreen trees after Christmas.
- Continue usual practices of composting, reducing garbage by only buying what is needed, choosing products with little or no packaging and if there is packaging, recycle everything your municipality allows for.
- Recycle paper, cardboard and all other recyclables.
- Participate in battery and cell phone collections.
- Car pool to work.
- Get rid of your household hazardous waste during Household Hazardous Waste Days.

Please check the MMSB website www.mmsb.nl.ca for the locations and dates.

As a family of four with two parents and two young boys we make our recycling efforts a family priority. The boys are taught in school to recycle, reduce and reuse and we implement this theory at home as well. They put their garbage in their pockets and bring it home instead of throwing it away in public.

Our oldest boy has the job of taking the food waste out to the bin as part of earning his weekly allowance. Also, our youngest knows that food left on his plate does NOT go into the garbage but into the bin. We all know how important recycling is to save the future of our planet. They make us proud.
