Circular Economy Month 2022 Founding Partner
The growth and transformation of Waste Reduction Week to Circular Economy Month wouldn’t be possible without the support of our program partners over the past twenty years. For 2022 we are pleased to welcome Kal Tire as a Founding Partner of Canada’s very first Circular Economy Month campaign and new member of Circular Innovation Council.
Kal Tire is committed to extending the life of the products they sell, diverting waste from landfills, and working toward circularity in their industry. They are active participants in Canada’s transition to a circular economy through their expanding tire retread product offerings and vertically integrated take-back and recycle business model. In Canada, Kal Tire operates close to a dozen retread facilities, which retread approximately 300,000 tires annually.
The circular economy recognizes a combination of business models that aligns economic, environmental, and social outcomes simultaneously. Through its tire retreading and recycling services, Kal Tire is integrating two key circular business models: product life extension and resource recovery.
Kal Tire is Canada’s largest independent tire dealer and one of North America’s largest commercial tire dealers with over 250 Kal Tire retail and commercial stores from British Columbia to British Columbia to Newfoundland, with 7 warehouse facilities and 10 retread manufacturing plants.
At all of its stores, drivers can drop off up to four off-rim tires so they can be recycled into products such as rubber mats and playground surfaces. Across Canada, Kal Tire locations collect an estimated 2 million scrap tires for recycling every year.
Through their commercial truck and mining business, Kal Tire customers can extend the life of their tires and reduce their carbon footprint by applying a new tread to the casing of used tires. Each time a tire is retreaded approximately 57 litres of oil is saved compared to manufacturing a new tire.

“Circular Innovation Council is pleased to welcome Kal Tire to support our launch of Canada’s very first Circular Economy Month. Circular Economy Month provides us an opportunity to think about how production and consumption of products we use every day - like tires - impacts our environment. It is also a time to celebrate innovation and reimagine how we produce, use, and discard products to increase their value and reduce environmental impacts. By joining as a founding partner, Kal Tire is demonstrating its commitment to doing its part of facilitating and promoting Canada’s transition to a circular economy.”
