In our household, we recycle all the paper products, tin cans, pop cans and bottles, and food materials. I have a medium sized Rubbermaid tub of red wiggler worms that are fed raw vegetable scraps. The worms make castings out of these and we use the casting and "tea" in our garden. We also have a composte pile for scraps, leaves and grass clippings in the spring, summer and fall. In addition to these activities, we belong to Regina Full Circle. This is Regina's version of the Free Cycle groups found in other cities throughout North America. These groups freely trade/give away household items and products to other folks who want/need them. This not only recycles and reuses items that still have useable life in them but it keeps them out of our landfills. It's a great way to help out those less fortunate than ourselves.

Take Away Landfill Klutter To Recycle Again Sure Helps Trying to show ciy council that recycling in Swift Current is not as effective as it should be. Currently I estimate at least 2,000 cubic feet of clean cardboard is being hauled to the landfill in Swift Current (pop. 16,000) every week. I have no way of proving this yet but recent discussions would indicate to probabilities of much more. We need to address this. I am setting up a web page called TALK TRASH (Acronym is as above). I have set up facebook group called Talking Trash and am trying to get as many people in our community to put pressure on city hall. Many businesses are having their recycleables hauled to the landfill (after they have been sorted into cardboard dumpsters). I am just getting started on this and will keep you updated.

Ongoing activities include contracting out our recycling for paper, tin, glass and plastic. We won the 2009 SWRC award for recycling this spring. We are holding a Household Hazardous Waste Day October 3, 2009. The day will include seminiars on composting and recyclying and offer recycling bins for sale. Distribution of reusable shopping bags with the town logo is planned for the same day.
