We are beginning to plan information sessions and activites for WRW 2009. Last year we helped sponsor a handout/poster re possible places in our community where people could take reusable or recyclable items - quite successful - and hope to continue in this direction. To that end we will be downloading resources from this web site and will be back in touch with you.

I am co-ordinating between the residents, housing and a local youth church group to reduce what goes in the garbage bins and beautify the apartment building. The youth group will be learning about composting, compost tea and building a rotating composter for use at this seniors apartment building. We will also be utilizing leafs both in the composter and as a top dressing. The youth group will be planting, weeding, watering and designing gardens for the residents who wish to participate but are unable to do these tasks themselves.

Our own Oscar the Grouch will be part of many of these events: Holding several viewings of the film “Garbage, the Revolution Starts at Home”. Created our internal WRW webpages with announcements and links Employees can take a virtual tour and follow the path of their waste. Using Count Von Count to tally the number of bags of waste and bags of recyclables generated during the week. We will run your Osc-Watch news releases over our communications screens. We are promoting litterless lunch days in our cafeterias. Participants will be given a set of compostable cutlery. Displays will show our new colour coded standard waste cans, bags, and storage sheds. We will display various waste products that used to be considered hazardous, but are now recyclable. Oscar will teach a waste management awareness session for employees. We are implementing organic waste collection from our cafeteria kitchen, beginning during WRW.

We do not have recycling of plastic in our town up north. I would have to travel 3 hours to Thunder Bay to recycle. thetrefore it is a big recycling idea to reduce the plstic waste
