Just working on buying things with less packaging and less wasting of what I do purchase. I try to follow the three R's and the first R being "reduce" I feel it is the most important.

We are hosting a community meeting October 22 called "Is there a Future for Recycling in Rimbey?" Speakers Christina Seidel and Dave Whitfield from Environment Alberta will make a presentation about what is possible and happening in towns like ours. We're sponsoring a poster contest for children and youth. Questions to address: 1) What does it cost? 2) Can we afford NOT to recycle? 3) What are the real environmental benefits of recycling? 4) What's possible? 5) What can we do here?

Note:? This event has been postponed due to inclimate weather.? It will be re-booked for next spring.?
The Hudson Playground Committee is under the Cumberland/Oxford Community League in Edmonton. We have been working on a new playground for our community. Our playground is finished, and we are planning a grand opening and BBQ. At this event, we are organizing the BBQ to not have any throw-away cups or plates, and plan to compost any food waste.

I, like many others who are interested in websites like this one, try to do my best to minimise the waste I produce. When shopping, I avoid over-packaged products, and choose recyclable packaging if I can't find an unpackaged option. Years ago I made my own shopping bags, and am happy to see that North American shoppers are now encouraged to refuse plastic bags. Plastics are not collected for recycling in my community, but I save them anyway - I'll take them with me next time I make it to a larger centre. My two-year-old son knows all about recycling - he helps me sort it and take it to the depot. I do my best, but there is always more. What one step further will I take this Waste Reduction Week? Perhaps I will drive less, or turn the water off while I shampoo my hair in the shower. Maybe I'll finally bake my own crackers. Whatever it is, I will make an effort to keep it a part of my normal routine beyond the designated week.

We are beginning to plan information sessions and activites for WRW 2009. Last year we helped sponsor a handout/poster re possible places in our community where people could take reusable or recyclable items - quite successful - and hope to continue in this direction. To that end we will be downloading resources from this web site and will be back in touch with you.

In hopes of reducing not only personal consumption, but those in my community I have started my own company to urge people to live a greener life. To me one of the most important areas of this revolves around waste reduction by rethinking the items you already have in your house hold. Our peosonal goal this summer is to be non-consumers, by purchasing as little as we possibley can we will in turn produce much less waste from manufacturing, packing, shipping, and eventually throwing away we hope to put a large dent in this cycle. We have started our own compost bin and recycle as much as we can. Our small yard has become a beginning gardener's vegtable patch, and we encourage our children to take small portions and have seconds rather than be wasteful, we have even gone so far as to sell our extra car. I guess it comes down to the simple idea that the less we use the less we throw out. Or if I can use the mission statement from my business, is to inspire a simpler life for all of us, one family at a time, one day at a time, one planet for all time.

I am co-ordinating between the residents, housing and a local youth church group to reduce what goes in the garbage bins and beautify the apartment building. The youth group will be learning about composting, compost tea and building a rotating composter for use at this seniors apartment building. We will also be utilizing leafs both in the composter and as a top dressing. The youth group will be planting, weeding, watering and designing gardens for the residents who wish to participate but are unable to do these tasks themselves.

In our household, we recycle all the paper products, tin cans, pop cans and bottles, and food materials. I have a medium sized Rubbermaid tub of red wiggler worms that are fed raw vegetable scraps. The worms make castings out of these and we use the casting and "tea" in our garden. We also have a composte pile for scraps, leaves and grass clippings in the spring, summer and fall. In addition to these activities, we belong to Regina Full Circle. This is Regina's version of the Free Cycle groups found in other cities throughout North America. These groups freely trade/give away household items and products to other folks who want/need them. This not only recycles and reuses items that still have useable life in them but it keeps them out of our landfills. It's a great way to help out those less fortunate than ourselves.

We save all our glass jars and use them as travel coffee cups, storage for rice and grains... well actually for anything crackers, cereal, cookies, etc. i reconstruct old clothes into new dresses, skirts, jackets and whatnot for my young daughters. we compost food waste. with 2 small children in diapers (seventh generation chlorine free) we only produce one bag of trash a week, and it is pretty much only diapers.... once my girls are out of diapers and i expect that our waste will be quite minimal!

During Waste Reduction Week in Canada I want to avoid any kind of non-reusable plastic. In the last four weeks I became aware of all the plastic packaging and bags I use every day. Although I use reusable cloth shopping bags the amount is still to high. Muesli, bread, washing detergent, tea bags, milk, napkin box - they are all packed in plastic or contain plastic. After using the products up there is no use for the packaging and the plastic.
I recycle as much as possible, but it would be even better to reduce the amount right away before it becomes waste. Therefore I want to take the challenge to live one week plastic-free. I will bake my own bread, get muesli in bulk in reusable containers from the community store, drink loose tea (which tastes better anyways) and buy milk in reusable glass bottles.
