I, like many others who are interested in websites like this one, try to do my best to minimise the waste I produce. When shopping, I avoid over-packaged products, and choose recyclable packaging if I can't find an unpackaged option. Years ago I made my own shopping bags, and am happy to see that North American shoppers are now encouraged to refuse plastic bags. Plastics are not collected for recycling in my community, but I save them anyway - I'll take them with me next time I make it to a larger centre. My two-year-old son knows all about recycling - he helps me sort it and take it to the depot. I do my best, but there is always more. What one step further will I take this Waste Reduction Week? Perhaps I will drive less, or turn the water off while I shampoo my hair in the shower. Maybe I'll finally bake my own crackers. Whatever it is, I will make an effort to keep it a part of my normal routine beyond the designated week.

We save all our glass jars and use them as travel coffee cups, storage for rice and grains... well actually for anything crackers, cereal, cookies, etc. i reconstruct old clothes into new dresses, skirts, jackets and whatnot for my young daughters. we compost food waste. with 2 small children in diapers (seventh generation chlorine free) we only produce one bag of trash a week, and it is pretty much only diapers.... once my girls are out of diapers and i expect that our waste will be quite minimal!

The Chilliwack Society for Community Living provides quality individualized supports for people with developmental disabilities and their families. In some cases, these supports are provided at a facility-based program. On Earth Day 2010, we started our first Big Green Challenge. All CSCL Programs were asked to lower their collective carbon footprint by engaging in the organization’s first Big Green Challenge.
Organized by the CSCL Green Committee, the challenge asked programs what they are doing in the following categories: 1.Recycling, 2.Composting, 3.Using enviro-friendly products, 4.Using a clothesline/hanger, 5.Using compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), 6.Washing in cold water, 7.Using recycled toilet paper, 8.Monitoring heat usage, 9.Using motion detector lighting and 10.a Miscellaneous category.
Green points were awarded to the programs that best exemplified Green practices within these categories.
The program with the highest amount of Green points at the end of the contest was announced the Big Green Challenge winner.

As part of Waste Reduction Week the City of Kamloops would like to thank residents for diverting their green waste through one of our yard waste sites and recycling through either curbside collection or one of the recycling depots throughout the community. We continue to encourage residents to compost at home and are very proud of the many organizations that help divert food waste out of our landfills by supporting the FoodShare program. Kamloops as a municipality is committed to conserving resources, protecting the environment and educating the community. We recognize the generation of solid waste and the needless waste of water and energy resources as global environmental problems and endeavor to take the lead in our community toward environmental sustainability.
