Schools: past activities and ideas

Calculation • Individuals were given the opportunity to calculate their Ecological Footprint and learn about waste reduction and recycling services
• Students participated in a classroom waste audit to calculate their daily waste generation
Clean-Up • A yard clean-up day was held at participating schools
Contests • Participated in annual school essay and poster contests
• No waste lunch competition held in schools, with winning class receiving certificates of merit
• Student created artwork to be judged by recycling councilors…winners received a lunch and had their poster on public display over WRW
• School contest was held to create posters for City Hall, as part of the Greening of Municipal Buildings Plan
Green Exchange • Toy, book and clothing exchanges were organized
Information • Information about Waste Reduction Week was distributed to local schools Launch Programs. A teacher started a classroom composting collection program
Sale • A school based garage sale was organized to raise money for environmental initiatives
Tours • Tours were given to local recycling facilities and landfills
• Supermarket tours to discuss the waste being generated by overpackaging
Workshops • A Vermicomposting show was held as part of an assembly
• A recycling truck display and information session was held to discussed proper disposal methods of recyclables
Other Suggestions • Make labels to place around the classroom to help remind students to reduce and conserve energy and resources
• Create a Recycling club at your school.
• Create a page on an existing school website where people can post things they want to exchange or give away
• As a challenge get students in the classroom to write down all the things they think can be recycled. The person with the longest list of correct answers wins. Wrong answers count against the game participant.
